L8A

The L8A was the first ever Mazda Cosmo prototype which used a 798 cc two rotor wankel. This motor was featured with the car at the 1963 Tokyo Motor show.

The engine had a hollow cast iron apex seal which reduced the biration and chatter marks. The L8a used a dry-sump lubrication system.

The rotor diameter was increased from the 40A to 98 mm (3.0 in), but the depth fell to 56 mm (2.2 in). One, three, and four rotor test engines were also created for experimentation.
