Rotary Engine Porting

Overlap

Overlapping mainly appears with Bridge Port , J-Port, Monster Port and Peripheral Port motors because the forced intake is applied these large-overlap designs.  For the most part theses types of ports will not be used in conjunction with turbo charging, due to the boost will leak out the (still open) exhaust port during low to medium RPM.

The overlapping occurs because of the eyebrow of the port that appears.  The port which is grinded into the rotor housing surface is not fully closed off from the rotor face.  I have heard individuals increasing their boost to compensate for the loss, but in my opinion it doesn’t solve the problem.  In general you’ll find overlapping in the natural aspirated motors, because rotary engines with forced induction typically don’t use the bridge ports, Monster Ports, J-Ports, or Peripheral Ports.
