Porting Tools
In able to do a porting job on your rotary engine you’ll need the correct tools. For rotary engine porting, the tools needed are similiar to the head porting tools.
You’ll need good lighting, some ear phones, and a comfortable place to work. Whatever position works best for you when you port, but most people like to stand.
You need some sort of device to hold your pieces still while you port. While porting there is a tremendous amount of vibration coming from the tools, so the last thing you want are your parts becoming loose.
You’ll need a dye grinder; most engine shops use an air powered one. I’d probably stay away from the electric because the air power will be the most powerful. The last thing you want is a slow dye grinder while you try to port.
That being said you want to have enough air pressure to do the correct job, so you’ll have to have an air compressor for this.
Lastly, you’ll need an assortment of different dye cutters and grinders. You’ll also want sanders because after you grind away at your port, you’ll want to polish it to make it smooth. Consider that your polishing tool.
Mainly you’ll want to use the oval shaped, and sphere shaped dye bits while porting the intakes. You’ll probably want carbide bits, as theses are the strongest and last the longest.
Oh, don’t forget, you’ll need safety glasses too; the last thing you want is metal and aluminum shavings to get stuck in your eyes. I have provided some links to where you can purchase theses tools online.
