How to Check Rotor Housings

Rotary Engine Rebuilding Video

This week’s video shows how to examine your rotor housings to see if they are usable for rebuilding your motor. There are many people who rebuild their engines with used, junk rotor housings, and they wonder why there engine does not have the life as the original factory motor did. We strongly recommend replacing your rotor housings, although if your housings are in great shape you can replace them.

We will dive into the details on how to examine your rotor housings, and what the specifications are. Included are some pictures from the Mazda Factory Rebuild Manual for your viewing also. If you find your housings has several damages we have shown on this video, they are probably not a good candidate for rebuilding your motor. If you have any questions please feel free to ask questions on our forum. Hopefully you will find this information useful, if you need replacement rotor housings because yours is junk, contact a local rotary engine shop. Now, at least, you’ll know what to look for.

haha so out of all those things, i've got chatter marks, my chrome has worn itself too far towards the centre, my exhaust port sleeve is loose, my chrome around the spark plug holes is cracked, and a corner seal has died along with another apex seal.....

thats probably why i found it in someguys trailer....oh well it made a good ornament in my room

why say that "In general, the shiner the surface, the more worn down the surface is as well."?

It is because stock, OEM, brand new the surfaces are not shinny, but a dull matte silver color. The more they have been used the more material has been scraped off. The shinner it is means the original surface has been greatly lessend.

Hope that makes sense, does it?

thanks Wesley. But what's the materials coated on the surface, hard chromium, a chromium-molybdenum alloy or ceramic-chrome-carbide alloy? and what kind of apex seals can be match to these materials with less wear, the steel or carbon apex seals?

when these engines are worn, they will suffer very difficult starting problems, once running the expansion of the working parts due to heat on the metalic parts will aid running, but when cold and worn........ starting is what to look for in a second hand pre owned vehicle. ask the seller if they are happy for you to carry out a compression check, this will further determine engine wear.
